I first came across Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) when my children were small and I was suffering from a very painful back. The gentle approach to BCST belied its powerful effects. Within a few sessions, my back was better and I could confidently manage the demands of working and being a mother of five small children. The practicality was important, but what remained with me and encouraged me later to train as a therapist was the deep sense of calm and nurturing received in those treatments. It was as if my body was being listened to rather than just being fixed.
CST supports the nervous system and energy levels, and one’s sense of well-being. It gives a chance to reset, to find the space for new pathways and new approaches. Simply, one can see life in a different way.
I am fortunate to have trained with Circle Cranio on their diploma course, and am registered with and adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the Craniosacral Therapy Association (CSTA). I have also been teaching Scaravelli yoga for more than ten years and am a registered teacher of Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs. I love that these ways of working are deeply rooted in allowing the whole of us, body, mind and spirit, to express itself and align with a more comfortable and natural way of being.
What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle but potent way of working with the body using a light touch. It supports the body’s intrinsic ability to balance, restore and heal itself as well as helping to reduce stress and build underlying energy. Craniosacral work listens to the subtle tidelike rhythms of the body, recognising patterns of restriction and allowing the nervous system to balance and reset. Suitable for everyone, from babies to older people, CST can help with acute issues such as headaches and back pain, as well as more longstanding physical or emotional issues such as chronic pain, stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression.
The Biodynamic approach recognises the deep healing processes innate within the body and allows the client to be part of their own recovery.
Why choose CST?
Modern-day life is generally fast paced and pressurised. Of necessity we need to be connected but it is easy to be sucked into continual connectivity, in fact it is quite difficult not to be. Although we are designed to manage and indeed thrive on a certain amount, extended periods of stress and over stimulation can be overwhelming and impacts on how we function and ultimately may lead to chronic illness. We can feel ‘stuck’ or maybe be in a state of continual low-level stress which becomes habitual and almost unnoticed. If this is you, then CST may well help.
CST is a natural way of helping our bodies to rest and recover and in such a way that feels safe. It has the ability to treat the source of symptoms on every level, whether mental, physical or emotional.
Pregnant women, mothers & babies
CST can be supportive during pregnancy and for mothers and babies. It can help the body and mind to adapt to the many changes it undergoes during this time. The after effects of difficult births as well as sleep patterns, colic and teething can respond well to this gentle but potent treatment.
What does CST feel like?
In a typical session you will lie fully clothed on a treatment couch, or you may lie on your side or sit in a chair. Using a light touch, always negotiated and client led, the therapist ‘listens’ to your body and your body responds by beginning to listen to itself. Our work is guided by the client rather than imposing our ideas on how to fix.
You may become aware of sensations such as heat, tingling or pulsation as changes occur. You may feel deeply rested. You may feel calm and energised, with increased clarity of mind and a feeling of well-being and ability to cope.
How many sessions?
Some people feel relief after one or two sessions but to benefit fully, especially with chronic conditions, you may need more long-term craniosacral therapy but with the frequency of sessions decreasing over time.
